How to Tell If Someone Saved Your Number on Telegram

Telegram never built a screen that lists the people who added you, but it does print the answer in one line of text almost nobody reads.

Someone keeps messaging you and you want to know whether your number sits in their address book. The usual answer online is that Telegram exposes nothing, so watch read receipts or install a tracker app. Both suggestions are wrong.

Here is what gets left out. When you open the add contact screen for a person who has not saved you, Telegram writes the condition onto the screen in plain language. The English string reads "Phone number will be visible once %1$@ adds you as a contact." If it appears under the name fields, that person has not added you as a contact at that moment. If a number later replaces it, they have.

Two other things decide whether this means anything. If you saved that person's number in your own phone address book, you will see their number whatever they chose, so in the most common scenario the signal carries zero information. And the "joined Telegram" notification proves that you saved them, not the reverse.

What Telegram Actually Reveals About Saved Contacts

Telegram has no "who added me" list and no viewer log. What exists is a set of behaviours that leak the answer sideways, and one of them is deliberate interface copy. That same line ships on iPhone, Android, Telegram Desktop, Telegram Web and macOS.

The add contact notice is the deliberate one. Telegram prints it to explain why the phone number field is empty, and a condition only gets printed when it has not been met yet. Take a colleague who messages you from a number you never stored. You open her profile, tap to add her, and the notice sits exactly where her number would be. She has not saved you inside Telegram.

The signal runs one way, and that limit matters. If her privacy is set to Everybody, the notice never appears whether or not she saved you. So the notice showing up is meaningful. Its absence is not.

How Does Phone Number Visibility Really Work?

By default your number is visible only to people you have added as contacts. Telegram states the rule, then adds the sentence that undoes most amateur detective work, which is that people who already know your number and keep it saved will always see it. The control sits under Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number.

The architecture is one way. Your setting reads your contact list, never the other person's. Three consequences follow.

• Saved their number in your own address book? You see it regardless of their setting, so its visibility tells you nothing.
• The signal only becomes readable when you have not saved that number. A visible number then means either Everybody, or My Contacts plus they added you.
• Even on Nobody, everyone who already knew the number keeps seeing it.

One wrinkle matters before you test anything. When you add someone, Telegram offers a consent option that shares your own number with them, recorded in the API as a phone privacy exception. Once it is ticked, that person is written into your exception list, and removing them from your contacts later does not delete the record. That answers the complaint you see constantly in user forums, where somebody deletes a contact and finds their number still visible weeks later.

How Do You Check the Add Contact Screen Step by Step?

The test below is the most reliable one available. Run it only when you have not saved the person's number yourself, because that is the one condition where the result comes back clean.

1. Open your phone's address book and confirm you have not saved that number.
2. Open Telegram and go to the chat with that person.
3. Tap the name at the top to open the profile.
4. Choose the option to add them to your contacts.
5. Read the area under the first and last name fields.
6. Look for the sentence about the phone number becoming visible once they add you.
7. Cancel without saving if you were only checking.
8. Repeat the check a week later and compare.

Reading the outcome takes care, because two different states both produce a visible number.

How Do You Check a Profile on iPhone and on Android?

The profile page is where the outcome above gets confirmed over time. Both platforms show the same fields, so the difference is where your thumb lands.

On an iPhone, work through it like this.

1. Tap the chat with that person.
2. Tap the contact name in the header bar at the top.
3. Look at the row where a phone number would sit.
4. Read the status line directly under the name.
5. Note whether a profile photo loads or a plain initial appears.

On Android the sequence mirrors it.

1. Tap the chat with that person.

One scenario shows why the photo deserves so little weight. Say the picture loads perfectly. The default photo setting is Everybody, so a user who has never added a single contact still shows a picture to strangers. A photo open to all, a photo behind My Contacts, and a photo opened to you alone all look identical from where you stand.

Can You See Who Saved Your Number on Telegram?

Not as a list, no. The underlying data does exist on the server, which is why the flat claim that this information does not exist is inaccurate. Telegram's user object carries two separate fields. One marks that a user is your contact. The other marks a mutual contact, meaning you are in each other's lists, and the server sends that distinction to the client.

The catch is who gets to read it. Only a client logged into your account over Telegram's main protocol receives those fields. An ordinary bot cannot see them at all, because the Bot API exposes neither one, and the single relationship state a bot observes is whether it has itself been blocked. A contact report delivered by a bot reports nothing real.

Contact status is one relationship among several. You can add someone by username without knowing their number, or straight from a chat with the add to contacts button, so the phone number question drops out entirely. Group and channel membership sits outside all of it, since anyone in a shared group can message you whether or not either side saved anything, and a channel reports a subscriber count rather than a contact list. Owners thinking about that side of the platform are measuring reach, which is why Telegram member packages come up in growth conversations rather than privacy ones. The old People Nearby feature some articles still describe was removed in September 2024.

What Does the Joined Telegram Notification Really Mean?

The notification reads "%1$s joined Telegram!" and a matching service message appears inside the chat. It goes to the person holding the number in their address book, not to the person who just signed up.

Follow the direction and the meaning flips against the common reading. If you received that alert about someone, it proves their number was sitting in your address book and Telegram matched it during contact sync. Picture a cousin reinstalling Telegram on a new phone. You get the alert because you kept her number for years. She gets nothing about you.

Adding someone as a contact sends them no notification either, which is the other half of the same misunderstanding. The alert switches off under Settings > Notifications and Sounds, filed under Events on Android and New Contacts on iOS and macOS.

Does Last Seen Tell You Anything About Contact Status?

It reports privacy settings, not address books. Telegram enforces a reciprocity rule here, officially stated, which is that you cannot see the Last Seen times of people you do not share your own time with. Hide yours and everyone else's turns vague. Telegram Premium breaks that in one direction, since subscribers keep seeing others while hiding themselves.

The vague labels map onto real ranges, and knowing them stops a lot of guessing.

One automatic exception confuses people further. Whatever the setting says, a person appears online for roughly 30 seconds when they message you or a shared group, read your message in a one to one chat, or broadcast the typing indicator. Anyone convinced a contact is lying about being offline is usually watching that window. Tick marks report delivery and reading only, which makes the popular double tick theory pure invention.

How Do You Know If Someone Deleted Your Number?

No alert exists for this, so the honest approach is a before and after comparison. The removal test below works only if you first take your own copy of the number out of the picture, because that copy overrides everything else.

1. Open the chat with that person and tap the header to open their profile.
2. Open the menu at the top right and choose to delete the contact.
3. Delete the same number from your phone's address book as well.
4. Wait a few minutes, then close and reopen Telegram.
5. Open their profile again and check for a phone number row.
6. Open the add contact screen and read the line under the name fields.
7. Note the result, then repeat the check after several days.

Interpreting it is simple once the noise is gone. If the visibility notice now sits where a number used to be, their setting is My Contacts and they have not added you. If the number is still there, either they saved you or their setting is Everybody, and those two cannot be separated from outside.

Two traps deserve a warning. Deleting a contact inside Telegram alone does not stick, because contact sync pulls the number back from your phone book at the next refresh, which is why step three exists. Removal is also one sided, so you do not disappear from their list.

Saved Contact, Blocked or Deleted Account, How Do You Tell Them Apart?

Being unsaved and being blocked feel similar from your side and behave differently underneath. The clearest separator is whether messages still move.

Telegram publishes no indicator that confirms a block, and it never announces one to either side. The single indirect hint is the "a long time ago" status, and it cannot be reversed into proof, because an ordinary privacy setting produces the same words. Anyone offering a reliable test is selling certainty that does not exist.

The group re-add test gets treated as conclusive far too often as well. Failing to add someone back into a group might mean a block, or their setting for who can add them to groups, or an unrelated restriction, so three causes get collapsed into one conclusion. A profile that stops resolving at all is another case again, and Telegram documents no message that tells the cases apart.

Are Third Party Trackers Safe to Use?

Some of what these tools promise is impossible and some is real but expensive in a way the marketing never mentions. Start with the impossible half. Data on who viewed your profile exists nowhere in Telegram, not in the interface and not in the API, so a product claiming to show it is fabricating its output.

The other half is genuinely readable. The mutual contact field can be queried, so a service really could tell you who dropped you. To do that it needs a fully authenticated session on your account, which means handing over your login code. Telegram states that login codes must never be shared with any service or application, and that whoever controls the number controls the account.

The rulebook adds more reasons to stay away. Third party clients are not banned outright, but developer terms prohibit acting without the user's knowledge and consent and prohibit interfering with the accurate display of last seen and online status, which is what these trackers do. Telegram now badges unofficial client users on their profile, warning that messages sent to them may be less secure. Weigh a maybe-answer about one contact against losing the account.

Run that sequence and one of two things happens. You see the notice, and you know where you stand. Or you do not, and Telegram has decided this is not your business, which is roughly the point of the design.
